SEN-CO – Inclusion Lead – Birmingham

Job title: SEN-CO – Inclusion Lead. 
Location: Birmingham. 
Start date: January 2023.  
Position: Full Time, Permanent. 
Salary or salary scale: MPS/UPS +TLR. 

Introduction

Aquinas Education are looking for a full-time SEN-CO – Inclusion Lead for a school based in Birmingham to start in January 2023.

Job Purpose/Overall statement

  • To undertake the leadership and organisation of special needs throughout the school, including pupils with SEN, disabilities, EAL + G+T.
  • To be a member of the school’s senior management team and to be accountable for the progress of pupils on the SEN register.
  • To contribute to the SIP as part of the SMT, identifying needs of SEND, setting targets and developing action plans.
  • To liaise with parent governors and other agencies as appropriate to promote positive links with the wider community.

Strategic direction and development of Inclusion

  • To support staff within the school with pupil welfare, pupil well-being and behaviour management.
  • To liaise with and support staff in overcoming problems that affect learning.
  • To work with other designated professionals to raise educational expectations of all pupils.
  • To work with designated professionals to monitor identified cohorts/groups of pupils.
  • To develop implement and monitor mapping for all children on the special needs register in consultation with the Headteacher to take responsibility for inclusion across the school.
  • To develop and implement policies and practices which reflect the school’s commitment to high achievement through effective teaching and learning.
  • To have enthusiasm for inclusion which motivates and supports other staff and encourages a shared understanding of the contribution this area can make to all aspects of pupils’ lives.

Teaching and learning

  • To undertake responsibility for teaching and learning in relation to SEND, EAL, G&T, and Behaviour in consultation with the SMT.
  • To provide an outstanding role model as a classroom practitioner.
  • To display flair and creativity in engaging, enthusing and challenging groups of pupils;
    • a) Set up programs of work for individual children, assess progress and make recommendations.
    • b) To compile and maintain the school’s SEN register and oversee the records of all SEN pupils, development of EHC plans.
  • To ensure that teachers are aware of the implications of equality of opportunity for all pupils with SEND.

Leading and Managing Staff:

With specific reference to pupils with SEND, EAL, G&T and Behaviour

  • To assist with the planning of professional development of all staff.
  • To demonstrate an excellent ability to advise and support other teachers.
  • To provide clear feedback, good support and sound advice to others.
  • To provide examples, coaching and training to help others become more effective in their teaching.
  • To help others evaluate the impact of their teaching on raising pupils achievement.
  • To enable all teachers to achieve expertise in planning and teaching through example, support and by leading or providing high-quality professional development opportunities.
  • To ensure that the Headteacher, SMT and governors are well informed about policies, plans, priorities and targets and that these are properly incorporated into the SIP for special needs.
  • In consultation with the Headteacher for the deployment of teaching assistants.
  • Line management of the T.A’s.

Effective Deployment of Resources

  • To support the Headteacher and the leadership team by maintaining efficient and effective management and organisation of learning resources, by developing or identifying new resources including ICT applications to the curriculum.
  • To be aware and respond appropriately to any health and safety issues raised by materials, practice or accommodation related to the curriculum for pupils with SEN.
  • To support the Headteacher and leadership team by maintaining efficient and effective management of the budget for their area of responsibility.
  • To take on any additional responsibility which might from time to time be determined.

Accountability

  • To be responsible to the Headteacher and the governing body.
  • To be responsible for the supervision of the designated teaching and support staff.

The School

We are a 2-form entry school in Birmingham. We wish to appoint a highly motivated practitioner to lead the development of outstanding SEND provision across our school.

We are looking for someone who:-

  • Is an excellent classroom practitioner.
  • Has an understanding of how children learn and of barriers to learning.
  • Is able to support staff in the planning and delivering of learning for the needs of different groups or individuals.
  • Will work closely with children and parents on a range of interventions and strategies to support and challenge children’s learning.
  • Is committed to working strategically as part of the leadership team.
  • Is either working as an Inclusion Leader or who is looking to obtain the role and undertake the National Award for SENCO’s.
